Pay It Forward: School Lunch Edition

Neighbors in District Six and Round Rock are banding together to fight child hunger by paying off negative school lunch balances at area schools.
When we heard about how folks in Northwest Austin are paying off the negative lunch balances at area schools, we couldn’t wait to share the story of how these neighbors are making a difference. In District 6, we have neighborhoods zoned for Austin ISD as well as some zoned for Round Rock ISD. In all of these schools, there are families unable to consistently pay their child’s school lunch balances.
Many of the kids in these families rely on school lunches for their main meal of the day. When their accounts become negative, instead of the usual hot lunch, these students receive a lighter lunch that’s not as filling, and which publicizes to their classmates that they aren’t able to pay their balances.
Recently donors raised enough to pay off all the negative balances in Austin ISD, and Round Rock resident Felicia Miyakawa is crowd-funding to clear the balances in Round Rock ISD.  So far she’s raised enough pay off the lunch debt at Forest Creek Elementary, Ridgeview Middle School, Cedar Ridge High School, Stony Point High School, and The Success School.

At Stony Point, Felicia encountered a student who’d been personally affected by this issue. “The student who escorted me to the cafeteria manager told me that she has personally witnessed students going hungry at lunch. She said it is well-known among students which of the cafeteria workers are big-hearted and generous and will let kids take a tray of food even if they don’t have money, and which won’t. She remembers going hungry several days in Elementary school, until her mother came to the school and advocated for her.”
Donations continue to come in and Felicia will be announcing the next target soon! You can help pay off all the lunch debt in RRISD by donating here.
